Product Review and Giveaway: Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer

Temporal Scanner 2

I was definitely interested and excited to receive a temporal scanner thermometer to review from Exergen Corporation.  As any parent of babies and toddlers knows, taking a child's temperature usually does not rate as a favorite parenting task.  Even my 3-1/2 year old has tended to resist the ear and even a different forehead thermometer that we've used in the past.

The Exergen temporal scanner thermometer works differently than any other that I have tried or seen.  You simply place the tip of the thermometer in the middle of the child's forehead and then slide it across one side to the hairline.  That's it.  It takes about 2 seconds.
Temporal Scanner
My husband, daughter, and I tried a number of readings on each other, and I was favorably impressed.  For one thing, GiGi started to think it was really fun.  She kept saying excitedly, "It doesn't hurt!"  For another thing, the temperature readings we got hovered fairly consistantly around 98 degrees, presumably normal body temperature.  Other thermometers I have used in past seemed to give much less consistent results.  Of course, neither of my children obliging got a fever while we were testing the thermometer, so I wasn't able to test a different temperature range.  However, the results we did get made me fairly confident about using it for a real fever.

Really, I think the best part of the Exergen temporal thermometer is its ease of use.  I did read the instructions very carefully beforehand (there is an included User's Quick Start Guide to help you prevent common mistakes).  However, the instructions were very clear, and, once I got the idea of how to use it, nothing could be simpler.

The Exergen Temporal Thermometer retails for $30-$50.  In all honesty, as frugal as I am, I would not consider that too much to pay for an easy to use, accurate thermometer that will last.  I also liked that it takes a normal 9 volt battery, instead of some expensive special kind.  If you are interested in purchasing this thermometer, you can also get a $5 rebate here.

Also, Exergen has generously offered to give an Exergen thermometer to one Frugally Blonde reader!  To enter, please leave a comment on this post telling me why you would like to try this thermometer.  For extra entries, you may do any or all of the following (please leave a separate comment for each):

2) Follow Frugally Blonde by email

The contest ends on Thursday, March 17, at midnight.  It is open to residents of the US and Canada.  I will notify the winner by email, and he or she will have 72 hours to respond.

  1. I like this thermometer because it’s so non-invasive you can take a baby’s temperature in their sleep.

  2. I like how quickly you get a reading. My boys often don't want to sit still long enough to let our conventional thermometer finish making the reading inaccurate.

  3. I would love to have one of these thermometers in case my toddler gets sick. Thankfully, up until now, we haven't really needed one - but, I'd like to have one in our medicine cabinet "just in case."

  13. This would be great for my two kids and even the the hubster and me! It would make taking our temps so much easier, that's for certain!!!

  14. The other day I was worried that my 5 month old son may be running a temp. THEN began the great debate: Do I take his temperature and know for sure how he's doing, knowing that my poor, congested son will scream and writhe away from me the whole time? Or, do I just hope he doesn't have a temp, rather than take the risk of raising his temperature and irritating him with the thermometer.
With an easy, external thermometer, I wouldn't have to make a choice like that. I would be comfortable knowing how he's doing without sacrificing his peace or mine.

I follow you through my blog feed.

  15. We're currently using a 30+ year old forehead thing that is like a mood ring (the colours change according to how hot you are). It's not exactly the most accurate! This sounds way better!

  16. I have 4 kids and taking their thermometer from their temple would eliminate the need to buy safety covers to prevent germs from being spread and would alow me to check temps while kids were asleep.

  19. I would love to win this because it's such a pain trying to get an accurate temp. reading off of my kids--when they are sick (or not)--they don't want to sit still while I stick something in their armpit, mouth or bum :P

  20. I have struggled trying to get an accurate temp. on my toddler and with another on the way, this would be very helpful.

  21. I would love to win this! When I was in the hospital last week the nurse had one of these and I didn't even realize she had taken my temperature. Right away I thought that it would be great to have for when Baby arrives.

  22. I would love to win this thormometer cause I am a very busy mother of 2 yr old twin girls and a 4 yr old boy. they hate sitting quitely when I try to take their temprature. and the ear thormometer gives different temprature in each ear, which is really confusing.

  25. I would love a NEW thermometer and especially one so cool and easy top use. There is truly nothing worse than having a sick kid in the middle of the night and you either cannot find a thermometer or the one you have is untrustworthy and thats how I feel! I hope I win!

  26. I got one as a gift when I had my oldest, but it stopped working mysteriously (so it lasted about 4 years). However, even so I think it was worth the money and have been planning on buying another because its so easy to use.

  27. I would love to win this for my family for several reasons, but the most important reason would be for my oldest son. He always has ear infections and hates when I have to take his temp in his ear.

  31. I would like to win this thermometer because I have had inconsistent readings with my ear thermometer and often wonder which ear reading do I trust before sending my child off to school. Sometimes one ear shows a fever and the other doesn't. To have something newer that would be easy to use, consistent and fast would be great. Thanks for the chance to win one!

  44. It seems this tine of year someone needs to be checked every week. At our home we have a couple of 3and4 yrs old who do not like their temperture taken, I think this would be great.

  45. It would be wonderful to have an easy to use thermometer. When one has a sick child the last thing you want to do is make things worse by trying to get a temperature reading in an uncomfortable way.

  46. That thermometor sounds really neat! I love how easy it sounds. We have used a thermometer that we usually put under the arm (as the kids just don't seem to be able to keep it under the tounge) but I always doubt the reliability. I would love something high tech like this!
