Tuesday Tips -- Send in Yours!

You might have noticed that in the new year I've been taking a break from my regular Tuesday Tips series.  I'm planning to relaunch it again in a few weeks, and I hope to make it better and more consistent.

But I need your help!  I'd like to include a wide variety of useful tips, and I know that my frugal readers have many such tips that they use every day.  I'd love to share your tips here at Frugally Blonde, and I will credit you or your blog for each tip I publish.

The basic idea of the Tuesday Tip is

"a quick, painless money-saving tip."

In other words, I'm not looking for big, life-changing financial strategies.  Instead, I'm looking for the little ways that you save money in everyday life, whether it's a way to reuse a household product, a substitution you make in cooking, or an easy shopping strategy.

Please send all your wonderful tips to frugallyblonde@gmail.com, with the subject line "Tuesday Tip."

We all know that the little things really do add up, so please take the time to share your little tips with me, so that we can all benefit from them!

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money-saving tip every Tuesday . . .

Today's Tuesday Tip is thanks to Colleen.

Find creative ways to reuse used and scrap paper.

"I use the return envelopes that come with bills as my coupon separators, I even use one on shopping day, write my list on the out side and put the coupons I am going to use inside."

"I use the back of the kids school papers to print coupons on, I have even used colored paper, the stores take them no problem."

"What to do with the 2/3 of a piece of paper that is left after printing that one coupon . . . we are making snowflake cut outs as winter decorations for our windows!"

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday . . .

When doing laundry, cut your fabric softener sheets in two pieces and use just half per load.  You probably will never notice the difference, and you've just made your purchase go twice as far.  If this works for you, try the concept with other things . . . can you use just half a paper towel? Half the amount of soap or shampoo?  In the Tightwad Gazette, the author talks about cutting the amount of items you normally use in half, and then if that is too little, working up from there until you find the minimum amount that works for you.  What else could you cut in half?

Use Swagbucks for all your internet searches!  If you don't already know, Swagbucks is an internet search engine that rewards you with points ("swagbucks") for your searches.  If you refer others who join Swagbucks, you can earn a bonus, plus matching Swagbucks for the ones they earn. (Full disclosure: I will earn Swagbucks if you sign up through my link.)  You can save up your Swagbucks to earn gift cards for great stores, including Amazon.com and Starbucks!

I have been a member of Swagbucks about 6 months, and I use it for a couple of searches 3-5 days a week.  It usually only takes 2 or 3 searches to earn at least one Swagbuck.  I have made only two referrals, but with the combination of the referrals and the swagbucks from my searches, I should have enough bucks for a $20 Amazon gift card by Christmas.

That's certainly a nice bonus for doing something that I already do anyway!

Tuesday Tip

Today's Tuesday tip is thanks to Leann.  She writes,

"I would have to say that my favorite money saver is breast feeding.  Not only is it a free and readily available food source, it helps keep babies healthy . . . .This is so important to me.  I even breast fed our two year old who was born at 23 weeks 3 days of gestation.  I had to pump for four months before she was actually able to nurse on her own and gain weight.  She only received my milk (with some calorie additives) and she has never been sick with an infection or virus."

It's often said, but it bears repeating, breast feeding saves so much money!  One article I read put the average cost of formula for the first year at $1500-$2000, not counting bottles and other supplies!  Even if you count the cost of extra food for the hungry breastfeeding mommy and any nursing supplies, the cost of breastfeeding is still much lower.  And of course, it has so many other benefits to mommy and baby, including potentially preventing health problems.

(Needless to say, I don't think there's ever a reason that any mommy should judge another for not breastfeeding.  I just think it's worth it to point the advantages of breast feeding from a purely economic standpoint. :-)

There's a good article here that also talks about the money saving benefits of "nature's magic money saver."

Tuesday Tip

A quick & painless money saving tip every Tuesday . . .

Cook once and eat twice (or three or four times)!  Whether I'm making a pot of soup for dinner or baking muffins, I automatically make at least double what we need for a meal.  With dinners, I often serve the same entree twice during the week, often with different side dishes.  With baked goods, I just put what we won't eat within a few days in the freezer.

This is of course a huge time saver, and it is a surprisingly huge money saver as well.  First of all, it generally costs less to make two of the same meal rather than two different meals, because you don't have to buy additional ingredients, and you can buy the ingredients in bulk.  Also, having an extra meal in the fridge or freezer for busy nights really reduces the chance of our getting takeout or even running to the grocery store for convenience foods.

Tuesday Tip

A quick & painless money-saving tip every Tuesday . . .

Extend your ground beef dishes by throwing a few beans into the mix.  This works especially well for dishes like chili, tacos, soups, and casseroles.  Black beans are my family's favorite, but any kind of beans will work.  I try to cook a large quantity of dried beans at a time and keep them in quart sized bags in the freezer.  Then it is easy to pull out whatever quantity I need for a recipe.

Beans are filling, a source of protein, and mild in taste, plus they are very inexpensive.  According to Harris Teeter's online store, 16 oz. of dried black beans are $1.29.  The cheapest I can regularly get ground beef (on sale) is $1.99/lb., and it is much more when not on a good sale.  Plus, that is generally 80/20 ground beef, which loses some of its weight when the fat cooks off.

Sometimes just a cup or a half a cup of beans is the difference between a meal's serving us for one night or two, which really extends the value we get from the meat.

Tuesday Tip

A quick & painless money saving tip every Tuesday!

To cut down on the ubiquitous forgotten leftovers at the back of the fridge, package and organize the uneaten part of your dinner before it becomes leftovers!  If there is enough left, I usually use one night's cooking for two dinners, and I plan which night we'll eat the second portion.  If there's not enough for a second dinner, try packaging the leftover meal in individual serving containers for lunches - including side dishes and sauces.  Then you can effortlessly grab a container to take to work or school or just to heat up in the middle of a busy day.

If all else fails, just freeze your leftovers as soon as dinner is over!  You can always pull them out of the freezer and thaw them, but if you stick them in the fridge without a plan to use them, you might be growing an unplanned science project in a couple of weeks. ;-)

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday

When buying fresh herbs for a recipe, dry or freeze the portion that you don't use. Most recipes that call for fresh herbs only require a small amount, and if you paid two or three dollars for a large bunch, that can be a lot of waste. However, if you dry the remainder of the bunch, you might save yourself almost the entire cost of a jar of dried herbs, which can easily be four or five dollars.

You can see my post on drying fresh herbs here. Also check out this guest post from Money Saving Mom with more ideas for preserving fresh herbs.

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money-saving tip every Tuesday . . .

Don't forget that if your store is out of a sale item, you can ask for a raincheck. (That is, a coupon entitling you to the sale price when you buy the item after they restock.)

I just recently started to ask for rainchecks, and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it is. You usually just have to go up to the customer service desk and ask for it. You can even tell them how many of the item you would like to buy, and they will make the raincheck for that amount (of course, there is probably a limit).

Just to give a couple of examples of the usefulness of rainchecks: when Harris Teeter was out of their $1.25 blueberries when I went there a couple of weeks ago, I got a raincheck for 4 pints. Now when blueberries are back to $3.99, I'll still be able to get a few more for my berry-loving daughter. Similarly, today when I went to HT for my second triple coupons run, they were out of the BOGO Ziploc sandwich bags and storage containers. With the raincheck that I have now, I can get the deal when they do triple coupons again, when these items might not be such a great deal if not on sale.

Tuesday Tip

Can you tell I have birthdays on the brain? Today's Tuesday Tip is sign up for birthday freebies for yourself, your spouse, and your children. A huge number of restaurants of all kinds offer freebies for kids' birthdays or for all birthdays. Check out the extensive list at Freebies 4 Mom.

Some of my favorite birthday freebies are the $3 gift card from ToysRUs and free ice cream at Baskin Robbins and ColdStone Creamery. Also, I was excited to hear from my friend Ashley how she got a free mini cake at Harris Teeter for her son's first birthday, and apparently other grocery stores have similar programs. I'll certainly be checking that out for my little girls 1st birthday coming up in September!

Tuesday Tip

Use bibs on your young children. Not only do they save money on laundry detergent and stain remover, but they save a lot of time and trouble trying to get stains out. Also, at least for me, there are always those stains that I can't get out and that ruin and waste clothes.

Personally, I think that all bibs should be both wipeable (so that they can be used for several meals) and machine washable (so that you can get them completely clean). I have been happy with Bumpkins (the investment is worth it), but Ikea also makes a pretty good similar bib.

I know that a lot of parents give up on bibs once the child can pull them off, but there lots of options out there that might stay on better. Bumpkins makes a bib with back ties and sleeves. Or try decorating a large old t-shirt as a special "meal shirt." For my almost three year old, we've moved onto cute kids aprons that I've gotten at the dollar store and Target dollar spot.

Tuesday Tip

If you still have a working VCR (or can get one from a yard sale or freecycle), look for used video cassettes for a cheap movie fix. Videos are all over the place at yard sales, consignment sales, freecycle, and thrift stores. They are so easy to get that I generally won't pay more than $.50 or maybe $1.00 for each. I especially love finding new children's videos for my daughter; sometimes I even find one that I actually remember from my childhood! When I went yardsaling with my mom last weekend, I also found new adult movies for Michael and myself, including "Apollo 13" and "The Two Towers" (from the Lord of the Rings trilogy). You can't beat $.50 to own a new movie!

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money-saving tip every Tuesday.

Today's tip is thanks to my mom!

Save your old, stained, or out-of-date clothes
and use them for cleaning, exercising, or yard work. Sometimes you stain or tear an item so that it is unwearable, and it probably would not be used or sold even by a charity such as Goodwill. Yet it seems to a shame to throw out clothes that still have usable fabric.

My mom's solution is to save the clothes and use them for jobs where she doesn't want to ruin good clothing or for exercising. Of course, you might need specialized exercise clothing for some kinds of workouts, but if you think about it, do you need to buy new clothing just to walk on the treadmill in your basement? Chances are, old shorts and a tee shirt would work just as well!

This tip saves money in several different ways. First, it saves money on buying specialized exercise or work clothing. It also protects your good clothing by not risking stains. Finally, it gives you more return on your investment in your old clothing and prevents waste.

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money-saving tip every Tuesday

Today's Tuesday tip is thanks to Tressa!

Bed Bath and Beyond 20% off coupons (which come in the mail a lot and also come inside Real Simple magazine pretty frequently) can be used at Buy Buy Baby, which is a baby store in the Northeast/DC area. There are some fine print exclusions, like a stroller purchase or Robeez.

I know I always have a ton of these coupons, so this is great to know. In the past, Bed Bath and Beyond would also accept their expired coupons, but I heard that they were changing that. Let us know if you know the scoop on that!

Francis at Frugal Fairhope has another great tip relating to BB&B coupons. Even though the coupons are only good in the store, you can still use them on something that is not available in your store. You do this by placing and paying for your order in the store, and using your coupon. You can still have the order sent to your house.

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday

Use a discount dry cleaner. Regular dry cleaning prices are so expensive, but did you know that there are discount dry cleaning chains and independent stores that charge one flat low price for any item? A lot of them seem to charge $1.99, with some variation based on the area of the country.

My mom has been using a discount dry cleaner successfully for years, so when I discovered one near my husband's workplace, I started making the extra effort to go there. I would estimate we save a minimum of a couple of dollar per item on something like a shirt, and probably at least ten dollars on a larger item, such as a coat!

I have never had a problem with the quality of the dry cleaning, although I would probably not use them for something like a formal dress, just because of the extra detailing and delicate fabrics. However, for our ordinary needs, the discount cleaners is perfect. Check your phone book or Google to find a discount dry cleaners in your area, or check out Dry Clean Depot, motto "We clean your clothes, not your wallet." Now I like that!

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money-saving tip every Tuesday:

Join Ebates to get cash back on your online purchases. After you sign up for Ebates, you simply start at the Ebates site when you're doing online shopping. When you click on one of the participating retailers through the Ebates site and then make a purchase, Ebates gives you a small percentage of the purchase as cash back. Also, you can make bonuses by referring your friends to Ebates. (Full disclosure: I could make a bonus if you sign up through my link.)

There are tons of retailers that participate in Ebates. Some of the ones that I commonly use include Snapfish, Target, Ebay, and Restaurant.com. I joined Ebates around Christmas, and I recently just got my first check for $15. I don't place a lot of online orders, but it sure is nice to get a little something back when I do!

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday

Set up automatic deposits from your paycheck to your savings account. I had read this advice many times before my husband and I finally set it up a few months ago. It truly is amazing that money out of sight is out of mind! In the past, even when we had a monthly savings budget, it was easy to forget to deposit it or to put it off because we had a lot of expenses in a month. However, now that it is automatically taken out of my husband's paycheck, we just can't and don't spend that money. We know that it is available in an emergency, but meanwhile it is accruing interest and adding up quickly.

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday

Save bread crumbs in a bag in the freezer and use them later in recipes. I keep a quart size freezer bag on my freezer door and put in it the crumbs from the cutting board when I slice homemade bread, cracker crumbs from the bottom of the box, and any ends of bread that have gotten stale. Then when I go to make meatloaf or something similar, I dump the contents of the bag in the food processor, pulse once or twice to even out the crumbs, and add them to the recipe.

This might sound silly or gross, but if you think about it, the crumbs are part of the same bread or crackers that you've been eating, only broken up. As long as you're saving the crumbs from a bag, box, or clean cutting board, they should be perfectly fine!

I started doing this a few months ago, and it's amazing how quickly the bag fills up! It's one of the those little things that can actually make a difference, both physically and psychologically. It makes me feel good to know that not only am I not wasting any part of our bread, but I am also saving a few slices of bread and thus a few pennies every time I cook with breadcrumbs.

Tuesday Tip

A quick, painless money saving tip every Tuesday

To save both energy and money, go around your house and unplug everything at night. You've probably read that many appliances and electronics use energy even when they're not in use. Some use energy even when they're not on.

It may be difficult to remember to unplug everything after you use it, but you can make it part of your bedtime routine to go around the house and unplug everything. I try to always keep the toaster, coffee grinder, and bread machine unplugged, and at least shut down and unplug the computers, TV, and DVD player at night. This also protects your equipment from power surges.

Every little bit helps!
