Blogging Break this Week

I'm sorry for my silence this week; I just wanted to let you know that I'll be back next week.  Something came up with my family (everyone's okay), and my children and I took an unexpected trip down to my parents house in North Carolina.  I'll be back to blogging next week!

Easter Break!

We start observing the Easter Triduum tomorrow, and I want to focus on the holiday and my family.  So I'm signing off here until after Easter.  (I will post the Giant deals on Monday.)

I hope you all have a very blessed Easter!

Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.

Saving Money by Going Green

I hate the misconception that some people seem to have that you cannot live both frugally and "naturally" or with environmentally friendly practices.  You can definitely be both green and frugal!  In fact, many "green" practices are actually money-saving practices as well.

So each year on Earth Day, I like to publish a list of green practices that not only do not cost money, but actually save you money.  Saving the the earth and saving money at the same time - what's not to love?!

This year Earth Day falls on Good Friday, when I won't be blogging, so I'm sharing my list a little early.

Here's my updated list of money-saving green ideas - share your ideas in the comments!

****

Turning off lights and unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use

Using rechargeable batteries

Keeping the heat and air conditioning a little lower and using clothing and other methods to stay comfortable

Carpooling or walking or biking to your destination

Combining errands, sharing errand duties with a friend, or simply skipping unnecessary errands

Growing your own organic produce

Using coupons to buy more organic products

Cooking and baking from scratch (saves on packaging and energy to produce prepared products and eliminates additives from your food)

Eating less meat

Buying food in bulk packages instead of individually wrapped

Buying more whole foods, fewer processed foods

Avoiding wasting food by using up leftovers and cooking with what you have

Composting your food scraps

Reusing plastic grocery bags - e.g. as trash bags for small trashcans, lunch bags, etc.

Buying used items - clothes, baby equipment, furniture, etc.

Borrowing and sharing items with friends

Buying energy-efficient appliances when you need to replace what you have

Breastfeeding

Using cloth diapers

Making homemade cleaners from natural products (vinegar, etc.) instead of buying pricey chemicals

Using resuable food containers and water bottles instead of disposable wraps and bottles

Avoiding paper plates and napkins and using regular dishes and cloth napkins

Trying to fix broken items instead of tossing them

Donating, freecycling, or recycling anything you can instead of throwing it away (donating can save money as tax deductions; freecycling can get you free stuff in return; recycling can make you money in some states)

Reusing worn out clothing, blankets, or towels as cleaning rags

What are other "green" practices that also save money?

Easter Grocery Deals

I thought I'd do just a quick roundup of last minute Easter grocery deals this week.

At pretty much every grocery store, look for the best prices of the season on the following items:  (These deals are so ubiquitous that it doesn't seem worth it to list every price.)
- Hams (Capitally Frugal has a roundup of ham prices in the DC area)
- Pineapples
- Asparagus
- Strawberries
- Sweet potatoes
- Eggs
- Butter (although the egg and butter deals have been disappointing this year, in my opinion)

There's also still time for some new and better deals from the stores with new ads starting tomorrow (such as HT, Safeway, and Bloom) or even Friday (Giant).

And here are your last minute candy deals for this week:

At Walgreens last night, I was excited to get Life Savers Jelly Beans for $1.00/bag - after sale, April coupon book coupon, and $1.00/2 from 4/3 SS insert.  Easter M&M's were also $1.00/bag after sale, coupon book coupon, and $1.00/2 from 4/10 RP insert or printable.

At CVS, the $1.97 M&M sale included non-Easter pretzel M&M's, so I used $1.00/1 coupon from the 3/13  RP insert to get these for $.97.  My CVS has also had some Gold Emblem candy (in the regular candy section) as much as 75% off the past two weeks, so keep an eye out for that.  Through today at CVS, you can get a Easter egg dying kit and a package of Easter grass free after ECBs.

Target has $.25 Easter grass and $.65 bags of a dozen plastic eggs this week.  Their candy prices are fairly competitive, although not quite as good as the drugstores.

Keep in mind that the week after Easter can be a great time to pick up discounted candy at least 50% off.  However, some of this week's deals are probably going to beat the 50% off regular price, between sales and coupons.  The majority of the Easter candy coupons expire on Easter, with the exception of the Life Savers/Starburst jelly beans coupon.

What Easter deals have you seen this week?
