Ebay Groupon Deal

You may have already seen this deal, as it's been going around the internet.  But in case you haven't, I wanted to share it, as it's too good a deal not to highlight!

Through Thursday, you can get a Groupon for $7 for a $15 order from Ebay!  You can apply the voucher to taxes and shipping, and you can use it over multiple transactions.  You have to have Ebay and Paypal accounts. I don't see an expiration date for the voucher.

This could definitely make for an even sweeter deal on an already good deal from Ebay!

(Thanks to Money Saving Mom, where I first saw this deal.)

WFMW: Sending Greeting Cards Online

I am so excited to share with you all an incredibly easy new way that I have found to send greeting cards!  Without moving from my computer, I can now personalize and send a mailed physical card to my loved ones, without having to mess with stamps, envelopes, or mail boxes.

How do I do this?  Through Hallmark.com.  I first discovered their addressing and mailing service a few months ago through an ad in a magazine.  They were running a promo to get the cost of the stamp for free when using their card service.  For a free stamp it sure seemed worth a try.

Basically, to use the service, you choose a card design on Hallmark's site.  They even have photo cards, which to me is a huge benefit.  The chances of my remembering to actually get photo prints made in time to include with a card for a particular event is practically nil, yet I know that photos bring such joy to faraway relatives.  This way, I just have to pick out a photo already on my computer and add it to the card.

After you have personalized your card with text and/or pictures, you simply enter the recipient's address and pay online, and Hallmark prints and ships the card for you.  You have to pay the cost of a stamp, but you would have to do that with a conventional card anyway.  The addressing and mailing service is free.

Best of all, the prices of the cards are very reasonable.  They range from $1.39 for a flat card to $5.99 for a musical card (customizable with any song from their library).  These are comparable to grocery or card store prices, with the added benefits of personalization and photos.  Plus, there have been lots of coupon codes available for the service.  I just got 30% off on my dad's birthday card with a code I found for through Google.

Using Hallmark's online card service costs me a little bit more than my usual dollar store card, but the added convenience and customization make it often worth the cost to me.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Hallmark.

Menu Planning Monday

I haven't published a menu plan for the last two weeks - life just got too busy to get it all down!  Each week I did jot down a tentative plan for myself, though; otherwise my life would have been total chaos!

We got pretty low in the food supply department the end of last week, so first up this week is a trip to Wegmans, followed by some baking and cooking.  I so wish that I could fit in a real day of "freezer cooking" each month, but these days it just doesn't seem possible.  So I do the best I can week to week, fitting in a batch of bread or a pot of soup at those random times when one or two of the little ones are sleeping!

Breakfasts -
cereal and milk
homemade instant oatmeal
yogurt
English muffins
banana muffins

Lunches -
Yakisoba noodles w. fried pierogis and sweet and sour sauce
Cheese and homemade wheat thins (excited to try these!)
Frozen homemade pizza
Salami sandwiches
PBJ

Dinners -
Wild Rice Salad, homemade bread
Sloppy Joes on homemade hamburger buns, chips, carrot sticks
Chicken and Fresh Tomato Slow Cooker Stew, salad, bread
Beef Tacos w. cheese, lettuce, refried beans, salsa, fruit salad
Homemade veggie pizza, carrot sticks
Leftovers

Check out more menu plans at Menu Planning Monday.

Homemade Tortilla Chips

I feel like it is so long since I've done a DIY cooking or baking post!  Since Baby #3 came along, it is just so much harder to spend my days making homemade English muffins or bagels!  Still, I absolutely love trying new "from-scratch" projects, and slowly, slowly I'm getting back into them again.

Last week, I was watching some short videos on Swagbucks to earn more bucks, and of course I clicked over to the Food Network videos.  Paula Dean had a video on frying your own tortilla chips, and it looked so easy.  We love chips and salsa around here, and I'm always looking for ways to save on our weekend snack.

As luck would have it, I had just bought two 12-packs of Wegmans corn tortillas for $.50 each, so I decided to try this project that very day.

I fried the chips in canola oil, since that's the oil that I keep around for general baking.  I put about 3/4 inch in my stainless steel skillet, and heated it on my electric stove at about medium high.  I did have to keep turning the temperature down as I cooked, since of course electric stoves don't keep consistent heat.  The biggest problem I have with frying is that I don't have an electric skillet that keeps a constant temperature, so I just have to do my best with adjusting the dial.

Really, it was pretty simple to fry the chips.  After heating the oil until it bubbled when I splashed in a drop of water, I fried each chip for a minute or so on each side.  It was fairly easy to tell when they were done, because they started to really look like chips.  After they came out, I laid them on paper towels to soak up the extra oil and sprinkled them right away with Kosher salt.

The chips were attractive and delicious!  They reminded me of the kind of tortilla chips you get at a nice Mexican restaurant. Since I cut the tortillas into quarters, a package of 12 made 48 thick, substantial chips.  I'll bet that's about as much (at least by weight) as you get in a regular sized bag of tortilla chips, for which I pay $2.50/bag for Wegmans brand.  The packages of tortillas I used are over $1 regular price, but I bet if you purchased those huge bags of corn tortillas you could get as low as $.50 for 12, or even lower.

Of course, any time you fry individual pieces one by one it is a little time-consuming.  And since I certainly couldn't hold a fussy baby while working with hot oil, I had to do this in fits and starts.  Also, although the chips still tasted good a couple of days later, they weren't quite as crispy as store-bought chips.  However, it was neat to make a snack that was a little more traditional "chip" than our homemade corn chips.

I think this project would be great for a weekend or party, or for a Mexican dinner if you have a little extra time.  I definitely plan to try it again.

Harris Teeter Super Doubles Deals

Believe it or not, I thought of skipping this Super Doubles week altogether.  The deals didn't seem as spectacular as last month's, and I'm near the end of our grocery budget for March.

Predictably, though .  . . I couldn't stay away.  However, I stuck mostly with free and very cheap items, and I'm still slightly under budget for the month.

Total Spent: about $11.00 - from a pre-coupons and sales total of over $65!

I picked up the Gerber fingertip toothbrush and baby toothpaste since a 50% off sign caught my eye, and Baby Gem seems to be teething.  However, my total at the checkout seemed a little high, and sure enough, it rang up full price.  I went to the service desk, and after checking the price, they gave me a full refund!  Apparently, HT has a policy to give the item for free if it rings up incorrectly.  Good to know!

Have you gotten any great grocery deals this week?

Consignment Sale Deals

Each time I come home from a consignment sale I just can't wait to share all my bargains!  I was up at 5:00AM this morning, but as always it was fun and worth it!  Here are my best finds from today's sale:

Maclaren Twin Traveller: $75

This seemed like a lot to spend for me, and I gulped a bit as I wrote the check.  But I've been very frustrated these past few months trying to go out with my Sit n Stand, as my 2-1/2 year old really still needs a place to sit down and be strapped in!  I've heard wonderful things about Maclaren's double strollers.  They don't seem to make this model any more, but the similar Twin Techno retails for over $300.

Stride Rite Sandals: $3

These look like new!  A similar pair would cost $40 in the store.

Gymboree Shorts, New with Tags: $5

They still have the tag for $26.50 attached!

Baby LuLu dress: $1

I couldn't believe this was just a dollar!  Here's a dress from their site for $49.  And this one looks even cuter on my "LuLu" than it does in the picture.

Hilda van Stockum book: $2

This is not so much about the bargain as about finding an out-of-print book by a classic author that I know from my childhood.

Roller skates: $3

The picture says it all!

Have you done any consignment sale shopping so far this season?  What are your best finds?

Alternatives to Consignment Sales

You've heard me going on and on about consignment sales for the past few weeks, and they are indeed one of the my favorite ways to get great deals on items for my kids.  However, what if you have no consignment sales in your area?  Or maybe you simply don't enjoy the crowds and busyness of these sales, or your husband works weekends and you can't attend.

Even if you can't or don't attend consignment sales but are still interested in finding quality used items for your children, there are plenty of other alternatives.  Here's a quick list of some ideas:

- Thrift stores - Your small town may not have seasonal consignment sales, but, chances are, it does have a thrift shop.  Merchandise at these store can very widely - since it's all donated, it can be lower quality.  The best strategy for thrift stores is to shop early and often!  You may go in ten times and find nothing, but that eleventh time you just might hit the jackpot.

- Consignment stores - These are going to be a big step up from thrift stores.  If you can find a kids' consignment store, you'll have access to plenty of gently-used merchandise.  Note that prices will probably be higher than at thrift shops or consignment sales, since there is a lot more overhead.  Your best bet for consignment stores is to watch for sales and coupons; they can also be a great source for highly specific items, like special occasion dresses.

 - Craigslist - This can be a great source for used items in your area, especially larger equipment, though it does take some work to be constantly checking for what you need.  The easiest way to shop for used clothes on Craigslist is to look for big lots, as you probably don't want to drive out to someone's house to purchase just one outfit..

 - Ebay - Ebay is great for finding specific items, since there is so much to choose from.  Plus, you can shop from your home and have your items delivered.  However, name brand clothes tend to be in pretty high demand, and I've seen them go for more than you could buy the item on sale.  Again, for the best prices look for lots of clothing, as opposed to individual items.  Also, buy mulitple items from the same seller to save on shipping.

- ThredUP - ThredUP is the newest alternative for finding gently used kids' clothes.  Basically, it's a online service that lets you swap boxes of clothes for points, so that you can then choose a box that meets your needs.  It costs $5 per box, plus $10 shipping, but you can earn credit towards future boxes by listing sizes that are in high demand.  This would be a great alternative if you have few used clothing sources in your area, or if you have trouble getting out to shop.

- Pooling resources - Getting together with friends and acquaintances can be a great way to save money in so many circumstances.  You could organize a clothing swap with friends or parents at your church or child's school.  Or what about organizing a carpool to a consignment sale several hours away and turn it into a fun day trip?  Heck, if you think there is a market for it, you could even organize your own consignment sale!

It's so easy to accumulate so many kids' items, and most parents eventually want to pass stuff on.  No matter where you live, I bet you can find a source for some good pre-loved items!

What are your favorite ways to find quality used items for your kids?
