It's Cyber Monday!

In case you haven't heard, it's "Cyber Monday" today!  Basically, this the "Black Friday" of online shopping, when online retailers roll out some of their best deals.  It seems to me that this is the biggest "Cyber Monday" so far, with discounts all over the internet.

I've been waiting to place a number of online orders until today, hoping for discounts or free shipping, and so far I have not been disappointed.  Here's a quick rundown of a few of my favorite deals:

Today's Mamapedia Sweet Deal is $20 for $40 worth of merchandise at Back to Basics Toys!  This is indeed a very sweet deal, as this is a quality toy company that in general does not have the type of discounts that you would find at a place like Toys R US.  However, you will be able to find much nicer toys.  You do have to sign up for Mamapedia to get the deal.

The daily deal site Eversave is having a promo today for $5 off any Save with code CYBERMONDAY.  There are a number of Saves to be had for each city.  For Washington DC you could pay only $5 for $20 worth of your choice of wine at Schneider's of Capitol Hill (with the coupon code).  This would be great for a gift for a wine love or just for your own use!

American Girl is having a sale with up to 50% off selected items.  This is another quality company that does not usually have many discounts, so check it out if your girls like American Girl dolls.

If you're Catholic, my friend Lacy over at Catholic Icing has an awesome Catholic gift guide today.  Better yet, she has exclusive coupon codes to a number of Catholic companies.  Sometimes I am frustrated that it is hard to find religious items for my children that are not super expensive, so I am definitely doing some shopping today.

On Diapers.com you may be able to get Robeez baby shoes for as little as $8 shipped (although they seemed to be out of a lot of the cheapest ones this morning).  These are the best shoes for babies, though!

There are still plenty of great photo deals around.  Snapfish.com by HP has free shipping today only, and many photo gift items are on sale.  It might also be a good opportunity to stock up on prints; you can't beat free shipping!

In addition, I would suggest that today you check out the website of any company from which you were thinking of placing an order. You are likely to be able to score at least free shipping.  It's a great day to get your Christmas shopping done!

Note: I'll be updating this post throughout the day as I find more deals, so check back!

Saying Thank You

This week I've naturally been thinking about gratitude.

I think sometimes as adults we remember to be thankful to God for the intangibles in our lives - the love of our families, our freedom, etc.  But lately I have been thinking about a number of gifts - physical wrapped presents - that I have received from other people during my life.  You certainly can't buy happiness, but the love and thoughtfulness that was put into these gifts actually made a huge difference to me.  That is why I have remembered them for years after they were given.

So as we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, and as we move into the season of gift-giving, I just want to say thank you once again for five presents that I have received throughout the years.  In chronological order, they are the following:

- A special birthday gift - When I was about 10 or 11, my dad went on a business trip right before my birthday.  While there, he visited an ethnic church like the one we had previously attended.  The church was selling pierogis (a delicious Polish dumpling), and he remembered that they were my favorite food.  Somehow he bought a couple of pounds of them frozen and transported them back on the plane with him, specifically for me.  That same birthday, he also surprised me with tickets to the Ice Capades for my mom, my sister, and me.  These things may seem small, but in our large family treats like these were uncommon, making them all the sweeter.  I've never forgotten how special I felt on that birthday.  Thank you, Dad.

- My wedding - Let's just say my parents did not expect me to get married at the age of 21!!!  They had college costs and children still at home, so plenty of expenses at the time.  I knew this and was willing to accept the minimum for our wedding, including making our own food.  Yet in the end, through much research and careful spending (that's a whole other post!), we were able to have a beautiful wedding with many of the classic accouterments, including a catered reception in a lovely historic inn.  My parents paid for the majority of the wedding, but even more than their generosity, I remember how they supported and trusted me at that special time.  Thank you, Mom and Dad.

- My wedding dress - An anonymous donor paid for my wedding dress.  I'm not kidding.  Early in my engagement, my mom informed me that a person close to me who wished to remain anonymous wanted to pay for my gown and veil.  She said that this person didn't want me to "shop at Bargain Basement."  Haha - the person obviously knew me!  So I had the luxury of visiting dress shops with only my tastes and not so much the price in mind.  I ended up a reasonably-priced-but-more-than-I-could-afford dress and was able to buy everything I needed right at that shop.  I have my suspicions who that person might be, although I don't know for sure, but as little as I could forget how I felt in my wedding gown could I forget this person's gift.  Thank you, Anonymous.

- The limo for our wedding - A lot of these gifts seem to be centered around my wedding; I think that's because in good circumstances I think that weddings can really bring out the love and generosity in people.  For example, as we were planning the wedding I planned to dispense with a limousine to save money.  I figured that some family member could drive us to the wedding and reception.  Out of the blue, one of my brothers, who was in high school at the time, informed me that he wanted to pay for a limo as his gift!  I was just blown away by both the thoughtfulness and generosity of this gesture - I didn't even know he was paying attention to the wedding planning!  We ended up with this vintage-looking black car with a very gentlemanly chauffeur, and I felt like a queen.  Thank you, Greg.

- A laptop - More recently, I posted over a year ago on this blog how difficult it was getting for me to continue blogging, mostly because of our very slow, old computer, which we could not afford to replace.  After I posted that, two different friends offered me computers!  They both had recently upgraded theirs and offered me their spares, which were still very usable and much better than the one I was using.  They could easily have sold or otherwise used these, and I was so touched by their generosity.  We accepted one offer and thanked them both, and I felt so blessed in my friends.  Thank you, B. and E.

I have been so blessed in my life and have received far too many wonderful gifts to name in one post.  I hope one day to be able to bless others as I have been blessed myself.

What special gifts have you received during your life for which you'd like to say thank you?

Advent Deals

My family is gearing up to start observing Advent, the season that anticipates Christmas, and I found a couple of deals on a few products to enhance our celebration that I thought were worth sharing.

First off, Advent candles.  Every year I search around town to find the requisite three purple and one rose candle.  Craft and big box stores are often out of the appropriate colors, so I've had to pay a hefty price to get them at Hallmark or Yankee Candle.  This year I am just not up for all that running around, so I was happy to find an Advent candle set for $3.99 online at Christianbook.com.  I also ordered this lovely Advent calendar for $2.99.
Shipping is just $3.99 for up to $20 of merchandise, and I figure that I probably would have paid nearly that much extra for more expensive candles, not to mention the trouble this is saving me!  If you're interested, check out Christianbook.com's bargain section as well - how can you resist browsing around the sections labeled "Christmas under $2" and "Under $1"?!

Next up, the Little People Nativity Set!  I have wanted this for my kids since I had my first daughter, and the cheapest I have ever seen it in the past is $30.  Well, this week at Target it is just $13.99!!!  This looks like such a meaningful toy for young children.  All I ask is to please not clean them out of my local store before I make it there on Monday morning. ;-)

Gearing Up for Christmas Shopping

I shared how I've been preparing for the holiday season here, and as I start to accomplish some of the items on that list I've been moving into more specific shopping preparation.  Making gift lists and scoping out deals are now a daily task for me, as I try to stretch my Christmas budget as far as it will go.

So I thought that today I'd share a few specific early shopping strategies that will help you prepare to hit the mall (or cyberspace) with confidence and to make the most of your gifting money.

So here are 5 strategies to gear up for your holiday shopping:

Making your list and checking it twice - It can't be stated enough - preparation, preparation, preparation!  Once you have your list of gift recipients and have set your budget, start jotting down ideas for what to get each person.  Then start narrowing down your choices as soon as possible.  The more specifically you know what items you want, the easier it is to find a good deal.

Comparing prices - Once you know certain items for which you are in the market, start doing a little research.  Find out the suggested retail price, and then find out if it often/ever sells for less.  If it is an item sold on Amazon, you can use CamelCamelCamel to get an idea of it's pricing history.  You can also use comparative shopping sites like Nextag or Pricegrabber to compare current prices, although I have found that these sites are not comprehensive.  Or simply check the price at a few large merchants online or in a few local stores.  Once you know the going price for an item, you'll know a great deal when you find it.

Signing up for store email lists - In the past few days I have been signing up for the email newsletter for every store that I think I might patronize for Christmas shopping.  You never know what kind of discounts and deals they may offer by email, and these emails also often include sale and clearance alerts.  I have a separate email address for coupons and newsletters, so I'm not worried about clogging up my inbox.

Taking advantage of early offers - I was so proud of my mom the other night when she told me she had already knocked out gifts for six relatives!  It was late one night last week when she checked her email and found that a food gift company that she likes had sent her an offer for free shipping that day only.  Even though it was late, she realized that this deal would be a huge savings when she was planning to send food gifts to a number of different relatives.  It turned out that you did not have to have the items shipped right away, so she picked out gifts, scheduled them for Christmas delivery, got free shipping, and saved over $50!  Lesson learned: if you find an offer now that you know is an excellent deal, there's no use procrastinating in the hope that something better might come along.

Waiting a little while, then buying - That being said, I am waiting to start most of my actual shopping until after Black Friday/Cyber Monday.  Even if I don't make it to the store next weekend, there will be so many online deals that I want to wait and check them out.  (You can check out the Black Friday ad scans here, and you can see my Black Friday shopping tips here.) However, after Cyber Monday I am not hesitating further.  I'm not the gambling type, and even if there is an amazing last-minute deal the week before Christmas, I don't mind paying a little more for peace of mind!

What other tips to you have to make the most of your Christmas shopping?

$10 Giving Challenge - "Wegmans Style"

Food Bank Button

I have been planning to participate in Moneywise Moms $10 Food Bank challenge, and I finally remembered to purchase my items!  Basically, the idea is to take $10 from your grocery budget this month, maximize it with deal shopping, and donate it to a food bank.

I had hoped to do this at Harris Teeter Super Doubles a few weeks ago, but I didn't have my act together that week.  So instead, I decided to just spend the $10 at Wegmans on their Wegmans brand deals.  I know that Wegmans brand is high quality, and I figured that even without coupons I could get a good amount of food for $10.

Here's what I got:

1 box Wegmans Toasted Oats - $1.99
1 box Wegmans Ziti - $.69
1 jar Wegmans Marinara Sauce - $.99
1 quart Wegmans Cream of Tomato Soup - $1.99
5 cans Wegmans vegetables - $.39 each
7 boxes Wegmans macaroni and cheese - $.33 each
Total: $10.18 with tax

I based some of my choices on the local interfaith relief organization's wish list, which was published in our church bulletin on Sunday.  Our monthly food collection is this weekend, so I know that I'll have an easy opportunity to drop it off.

This really made me think what a small fraction of our food budget $10 really is, yet what a difference the food could make to someone struggling. I've started to think that maybe I should do something like this every month; I'll be thinking and praying about that over the holiday season.

If you feel so inspired, think about joining the $10 Food Bank Challenge yourself!  Link up or comment with Gina and let me know too if you decide to join in!

American Apparel Groupon!

Today's side deal on Groupon for Washington DC is a $50 voucher to American Apparel for just $25!  I know that a lot of people love this store, and if you shop there regularly this is a steal!  Do note that this is for in-store purchase only, and does not include sale items.

To get this deal, go to Groupon and click on Washington, DC and find the deal under "More Great Deals Nearby."  Does anyone on your Christmas list want clothes this year?

Wegmans Baking Deals

I just wanted to point out the baking items at stock up prices at Wegmans this month and next.  Check them out below:

Wegmans All Purpose Flour (5 lbs.) - $.99 (Limit 2)

Wegmans Granulated Sugar (5 lbs.) - $1.99 (Limit 2 Bags)

Wegmans Light Brown, Dark Brown, or Confectioners' Sugar (2 lb.) - $1.19 (Limit 2 Bags)

Nestle Tollhouse Morsels (10-12 oz.) - $1.69 (through 01/08)
Buy 2 and use $1.00/2 printable coupon or $1.25/3 from 11/14 RP insert
Final Price: $1.19- $1.27 each

Betty Crocker Cookie Mixes - $1.69
Use $.40/1 coupon from 11/14 GM insert or here, here, or here
Final Price: $.89

These prices are about as low as you will find at a regular grocery store for baking essentials.  If you don't mind using Wegmans brand (which I always use without problems), this is an opportunity to stock up for at least the next few months, if not the whole year!

Several of these items have a limit of 2 at the sale price, so I have been trying to pick up two of at least the flour each time I shop.  I also love the Betty Crocker cookies mixes for quick, semi-homeamde cookies I can do with the girls, so I just picked up some of those.

All of these prices should be good through the end of the year, so you have time to build a good stash!

Best Deals Roundup

Great deals for your week, from the blogosphere and beyond . . .

The photo deals are really hopping this month, as companies compete for your Christmas business!

There's a really good one today on Plum District: Get $20 worth of cards, calendars, or photo books from Kodak Gallery for $10.  Although shipping is not included, apparantly you can have your order shipped to your local Target store for free.  To get this deal, go to Plum District and click on the deal for "Everywhere."

Snapfish is offering free shipping on orders over $25.  Shipping can sometimes really add to the cost of photo gifts, so this is a good deal if you have several items you know you want to buy.

Vistaprint is offering a bunch of items for FREE right now, including holiday cards, mugs, and photo calendars.  You just have to pay shipping and processing.  The lowest shipping to me for 10 free cards was $6.11, so this is not completely free, but it still could be a good deal.

In non-photo deals . . .

Wow - from November 18-21, Starbucks is offering Buy One Get One Free holiday drinks!!!  This would be great to pair with your discounted Starbucks gift card, if you were lucky enough to get one.  Go with a friend and split the bill! (Thanks, Money Saving Mom!)

Have you received the Target toy catalogue with all the coupons good through Thanksgiving?  One deal that I noticed that was particularly good was the wooden Thomas train starter set for just $12.99 with coupon!  A couple of years ago when our daughter received a train set for Christmas, the lowest I could find the Thomas set for was $30!

Since I ordered my kids' Halloween costumes with a Groupon to BuyCostumes.com, I have been receiving emails from the company.  Last week, they sent me a coupon code for 35% off a clearance order, so I poked around the site a bit.  In the clearance party section, I found bowling paper party goods marked down to $.49/pack!  My husband has a bowling party every year for his birthday, so I stocked up for the next few years.  They also had some princess tableware marked down to $.49.  I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye on their clearance in the future.

I found 75% off candy and Halloween decor at my CVS yesterday.  I picked up bags of Milky Ways, Nerds, and gummi bears and worms for $.99 each.  I'm saving the gummis for our Christmas road trip (we like to have chewy candy to keep us going) and the Milky Ways will totally work for Christmas stockings!

What great deals do you have your eye on this week?

November Freezer Cooking

Over the past week or so, I've been trying to slowly do some freezer cooking.  This was challenging, as I am still at the post-partum point where it's a victory to get a homemade dinner made.  However, it was important to me to try get a little extra cooking in, so that I would have some backup food for those crazy days.

I managed to fit some freezer cooking during a couple of times when my toddler napped, and I did a bunch one afternoon when a dear friend took the girls for a few hours.  I also am accomplishing a lot by doubling/tripling/quadrupling the dishes I make for dinner.  It take hardly any extra effort to make a large quantity of something versus a small one, and then I have dinner for multiple nights or to freeze.  So right now I am making everything in huge quantities!

Here's the cooking I accomplished recently:
- 12 homemade breakfast "hot pockets" using refrigerated crescent rolls
- 24 muffins (from mixes)
- 1 loaf chocolate chip banana bread
- 1 large pan baked oatmeal
- bag of homemade baked chicken nuggets
- huge batch of crock pot BBQ chicken - ate 3 times and 1 dinner in freezer
- huge pot of crock pot beef stew - ate 3 times

Some of this might not be technically "freezer cooking" since it never made it to the freezer!  It definitely would be nice to make everything over a day or two and sock it away, but that is just not going to happen in my life right now.  However, at least I stocked us up with a few homemade items to give us a start on the rest of the month!

My Wegmans deals are based on the Sterling/Leesburg, VA sales ad and deals that I find in the Leesburg store.

With thanks to the coupon database at Mrs. Moneysaver for help in compiling this.

My store doubles coupons up to $.50, but Wegmans' coupon policies vary by store. Find the policy at your store here.

Deal Roundup

Great deals for your week, from the blogosphere and beyond . . .

I found two really good Christmas shopping deals at the daily deal sites today.  The first is from Eversave:

S12 for $35 worth of organic toys and more from Wild Dill

This would be a great deal for Christmas shopping for the little ones on your list.  For around a $35 tab, I saw this Green toys cookware set for $39 or these adorable doughnuts for $34.   Pretty sweet to get them for just $12, plus shipping!  This deal is valid starting two days after you purchase the voucher, and the voucher is good for a year.

The second is from The FoundaryOne of their "boutiques" today is for Radio Flyer merchandise.  They have the All Terrain Cargo Wagon for $89 (It's $149 on the Radio Flyer site) and and the Soft Rock N Bounce pony for $49 ($79.99 on Radio Flyer site).  You have to sign up for the Foundary emails to see the deals.

Speaking of Christmas again, here's a great Christmas card deal from VistaPrint: get 20 holiday cards for $1.99!  You have to pay shipping and a $2.49 upload fee if you want a photo, but even so this should be an excellent deal.  I think I may try to order these, and then with the ones I got from Snapfish, I'll have all my cards!

If your kids like Build a Bear Workshop, there's a good coupon right now for the online store:

$5 off any Animal priced $10 or more at Build-A-Bear Workshop®, Valid online only. Use Code 95421, Shop Now!
I saw stuffed animals priced as low as $12 in the online store.

Restaurant.com also has one of their 80% off deals going on right now:

Restaurant.com Weekly Promo Offer 468 x 60

Remember, today is the last day of Harris Teeter Super Double Coupons.  There's still time to pick up a few deals if you haven't gone (or even if you have!).  Check out the deals here.

Lastly, be on the lookout for deeply discounted Halloween and fall items everywhere you go.  Retailers are all set up for Christmas now, so they want to get rid of the stuff quickly.  Let us know if you snag any amazing clearance deals!
