I'm Still Here . . .

. . . but I'm hoping not for long!  Baby #3 is due on Friday, and Mommy having trouble keeping her resolve to be patient.  Please excuse slower posting and email replies lately; my energy has started to lag.  I would definitely appreciate any thoughts and prayers you might send my way as I prepare for delivery!

So, I just wanted to remind you what I'll be up to if you don't see any posts at all for a few days.  However, as soon as I get home from the hospital I'll have some interesting guest posts up for you.  I'll also be planning to keep up with my Wegmans deals (with of course the possiblity of skipping a week, depending on when baby makes his or her appearance).

Can't wait to share the good news of our third child with you!

Review: Dryel Stain Pen and Dryel 3-In-1 Fabric Refresher

Dryel Stain Pen As a follow up to my previous post on the Dryel In-Home Dry Cleaning Starter Kit, I wanted to tell you more about the Dryel On the Go Stain Removal Pen and the Dryel 3-IN-1 Touch-Up Spray.

The Dryel On the Go Stain Removal Pen comes with the Starter Kit.  It is a small plastic pen that releases a clear liquid when squeezed.  Then you are supposed to rub the solution into the stain "like an eraser" with the brush tip.  Unlike other stain removal pens, it is safe for dry-clean only clothes, as well as delicates and hand-washables such as wools, silks, rayons, linens, cottons and other special care fabrics.   The pen is designed so that it can be used on the go and when you can't wash the garment immediately.

I first tried the stain removal pen on the skirt of one the dresses featured in my previous post.  The small stain did rub right out, but it appears that a slight darkish water mark remained on the skirt.  However, the fabric is a metallic, delicate fabric, so it may be the exception rather than the rule.  I also tried it on my daughter's new pj shirt that I had already washed once after she smeared it with chocolate.  I could actually see the stain come out as I rubbed it!  After washing, the stain appeared to be totally gone.

Dryel Fabric FreshenerThe Dryel 3-IN-1 Touch Up Spray is also desgined so that it can be used seperately from washing and is specially formulated to safely care for your everyday and dry clean clothes
The directions are to:
•Spray a light mist evenly on fabric.
•Use more spray in heavily wrinkled, smelly or clingy areas.
•Use hands to press and smooth away wrinkles.
•Air dry or dry in the dryer.

I tried the fabric refresher on this dress that had been hanging in LuLu's closet for a while, and was very wrinkled.  It looked much better afterwards, and could have easily worked for church with no ironing!  (I tried taking pictures, but it was too hard to see the difference.)  Since I avoid ironing at all costs, this is the perfect product for me!   I have used a similar wrinkle-removing spray before, but I thought the Dryel smelled better and less strongly.

I would definitely purchase both of these products on my own.  I am thinking of keeping one of the Stain Pens in my kitchen to pre-treat some of the girls stained clothes before they go in the hamper and sit and then have to be washed five times!

Don't forget - You can enter win your own Dryel Starter Kit here.

These two items were also provided by Mama Buzz for review.  The opinions are honest and my own.

Review and Giveaway: Dryel In-Home Drycleaning Starter Kit

Dryel Starter KitI have been interested to try the Dryel In-Home Drycleaning Kit for a long time.  As a committed practiioner of DIY, rather than pay someone else to do it, I've been wondering if it would be a frugal option for dry clean only clothes.

Basically, the dryel system is a way of steam-cleaning clothes in your dryer.  You put 1-4 items of clothing in the fabric bag and include one of the damp Dryel cloths.  Then you put it in the dryer on medium heat for 30 minutes for cleaning or 15 minutes for freshening up.

The Dryel Starter Kit includes an Instant Stain Remover Pen, 2X ULTRA Concentrated Refill Cloths, a Re-usable Fabric Protection Bag, and an instructional pamphlet including coupons.  (I am covering the main system in this post, and later today I'll publish a follow-up post covering the stain removal pen, as well as Dryel 3-IN-1 Touch-Up Spray.)

I first tried out the system with these two lovely dresses that I picked up at a yard sale for when my girls are bigger.  You are not supposed to use the Dryel system on leather, velvet, suede, or fur, but since these dresses were actually polyester and acetate, I went ahead and tried it.

It was certainly quick and easy to pop the dresses in the dryer and hang them up thirty minutes later.  They came out very slightly damp and looking fresh.  They had a fairly strong, but not unpleasant, detergent scent to them, but that seemed wear off after they hung in my closet door for a day or so.

The Dryel starter kit looks like it retails for about $10, and the refill cloths for about $10 for 6.  The bag that comes with the starter kit lasts for about 25 uses.  Those prices are as good or better a deal then the $1.99 dry cleaner that I try to patronize, not even counting the gas that it takes me to get there (it's somewhat far away).  And compared to the outrageous regular dry cleaner prices, Dryel comes out way on top!

Also, right now if you buy the Dryel starter kit at Walmart, you can get a full rebate!  There are also coupons on the Dryel site to print.

Overall, I was fairly impressed with the Dryel system.  Every mom I know hates doing short errands like the dry cleaner with kids, so doing it at home is a huge draw.  I might not entrust my most precious garments in the most delicate fabrics to the system, but those are few and far between.  For the majority of my dry cleaning needs, it seems to be a great solution.

One of you readers now gets to try their own Dryel Starter Kit without even doing the rebate, since I have one to give away here!

Giveaway: Safeway Back-to-School Event

As any of you with school-age children are well aware, it's back-to-school time!  Your kids may already have started school, or maybe they have one more glorious week of summer left!

Since my girls are not in school yet, this time of year does not affect us as much as it could.  However, my mom is a teacher, so I am definitely aware of her becoming much busier.  Also, next year GiGi will be in kindergarten, so I am already looking around at area schools..

If, like many involved parents, you're looking to support your child's or your local school, Safeway and Box Tops for Education can help!  This year at the Safeway Family of stores there are "2 Ways 2 Earn" cash for schools.  You may already know about collecting Box Tops to support your school.  This year, in addition, Safeway is giving 10% of the cost of participating Box Tops items back to schools!  You can give to any participating school, whether public or private.

Entering Blog Giveaways

One of the couponing/computer time management rules I have for myself is that I don't generally enter sweepstakes.  To me, even the short time spent entering is not worth it for the small chance I have of winning a large sweepstakes.  However, I do enter blog giveaways.

I guess I first discovered such giveaways by seeing Money Saving Mom's giveaway roundup each week, and figured that I would enter a few.  Imagine my surprise when I won one shortly after I started entering them!

So far I have won two product prize packs (Yoplait Delights Yogurt and Banana Cheerios), which both included free coupons for the product, as well as a few other items; a big box of organic snack bars; a pricey cloth diaper; and a $50 Safeway gift card!

The important difference for me between blog giveaways and sweepstakes is that the blog giveaways have far fewer entries, so there is a much greater chance of winning.  The giveaways I usually enter have anywhere from 40 or 50 to 1,000 or 1,500 entries.  That is a lot fewer than the tens of thousands with big sweepstakes!

Also, the prizes offered in blog giveaways are not necessarily of huge monetary value, unlike the scholarship or trip that some big company might be offering.  However, the blog giveaway prizes are often items that are useful to me as a mom or even something I could sell on Ebay if I don't use.  Getting a free box of cheerios or some snack bars is just another small way I can stretch our budget.

In general, my system for entering these contests is to check out a big giveaway roundup list, like Money Saving Mom's or My Four Monkey's Monkey Mondays (she also includes links to roundups on other days).  I go down the list of giveaways and cllick on the ones with a prize that I could use.  I have limited time to do this, so I don't usually waste time on something I don't think would be useful to me.  I normally enter each giveaway only once, although many giveaways have multiple options to enter.  However, these options usually involve somehow subscribing to the blog or somehow spreading the word about the giveaway, and I honestly just can't take the time to do that.  (Thank you  to those who have done this for my giveaways, however!)

That's it!  I don't do this every week; sometimes I don't enter any giveaways for a while.  But when I have time, it's kind of fun and only takes as long as I want it to.  Then it's just a nice suprise when once of a while I get an email entitled, "You've won!"

Do you enter blog giveaways or other types of contests?

Check out Frugal Fridays over at Life as Mom and Mrs. Moneysaver.

Amazing Gap Groupon Deal

I just had to share this awesome Groupon deal today, showing up for Washington DC and maybe other cities.  The deal is coupon for $50 worth of merchandise at the Gap for just $25!  If you shop at the Gap with any regularity at all, this should be worth it!  The certificate can only be used in store, and it expires Nov. 19.  There do not seem to be any restrictions on what you can buy, as long as you buy in-store at a regular Gap store, except for the exclusion of gift cards and a couple of brands like Robeez and Keds.  So if you find sale or clearance merchandise you could really clean up!

If you're interested in this deal, be sure to get it quickly, before they run out!

n.b. - If you sign up for Groupon through my link, I will get a referral bonus..

Weekly Deal Roundup

Just a few deals that are catching my eye this week, in no particular order . . .

Attention DC area readers: It's DC's restaurant week this week (Aug. 16-22)!  Most participating restaurants are offering fixed-price meals for $20.10 for lunch and $35.10 for dinner.  See all the details here.  While this may not exactly be a freebie, these are definitely bargain prices for nice restaurants, and a great opportunity if you have a special occasion to celebrate!

Also for locals, if you live in the Shirlington area, check out Your Shirlington for regularly updated free events and coupons.

For you fellow moms of little girls - American Girl is having a clearance sale, with prices up to 70% off!  This Snowy Day dress for little girls is $15, marked down from $48!

I'm noticing a few good new coupons on Coupons.com this week, such as another $1.00/2 Bic stationery products (combine with Target coupon to get free pens); $2.00 off Huggies Little Snugglers diapers; and a free Fruista freeze at Taco Bell with any purchase.  Print these now if you're interested, before they reach their limits!

After hearing a lot about it on frugal blogs, I'm starting to get into GrouponToday's DC deals were of interest to me, so I thought I'd share them.  You can get half price tickets to The Shakespeare Theatre's All's Well That Ends Well or half off a dozen gourmet cupcakes at Bittersweet Cafe in Alexandria.  Shakespeare and cupcakes - what could be sweeter? :-)  Just go to Groupon and choose DC as your city; look for the side deals on the right of the page if you don't see these right away.

Have you heard of Weekly Cinema?  This appears to be a type of club that gives you deeply discounted movie tickets for a certain fee per month.  This could be really worth it if you see movies regularly; I definitely don't have the opportunity to go the movies enough to make it worthwhile.  Has anyone ever tried this service?

Crystal shares here how to get a subscription to Family Fun Magazine for just $3.73/year.  I subscribe to this magazine and love the fun seasonal ideas it share.  It also occasionally has a couple of high-value grocery coupons or Gymboree coupons that make it extra worthwhile.

What other great deals do you see this week?

n.b. - Some of these links may be affiliate links, so if you sign up or purchase through my link, I will earn a tiny percentage. Thanks for your support.

Menu Plan

This week I'm continuing to try to gradually stock the little freezer for when the baby comes, mostly by making larger quantities of meals we'll be eating this week.  I'm very well stocked with ingredients from recent deals that I've gotten, so I mostly just had to pick up perishables when we went grocery shopping this morning.

Here's what I'm planning:

Breakfasts:
Cereal, poptarts, peach-banana muffins (made last week), yogurt

Lunches:
Cold cut sandwiches, cheese quesadillas, peanut butter, leftovers

Dinners:
Mon - Beef and Chicken Stir-fry (finishing last of beef & chicken from last week!), rice, fruit
Tues - Baked chicken, baked brown sugar carrots, green beans
Wed - Chicken enchiladas (making this recipe but substituting meats) (making at least one extra pan for freezer), corn
Thurs - Leftovers
Fri - Shrimp scampi or pesto pasta, salad, bread
Sat - Homemade pepperoni pizza (making extra for freezer)
Sun - Leftovers or TBA

Baking List
- sandwich bread
- banana cake or bread with the rest of my discount bananas

Last Call for Guest Posts!

Well, I have less than 3 weeks until my due date, and I'm definitely ready to be done with being pregnant.  However, I'm really trying to work on my patience and at least tolerate, if not enjoy, these last few weeks.  A while back I was inspired by something that Crystal wrote on Money Saving Mom, right before she had her third baby.  She said that she was enjoying the last few weeks of just being a family of four.

That really struck a chord with me when I read it, because I was so impatient for the last two months with my pregnancy with LuLu.  Then, after she was born, as much as loved her, I felt sad that I hadn't enjoyed the last moments alone with my first baby girl.  I had wasted so much time being impatient!  This new baby will be a huge gift to our family, but I know that it will totally change our lives and (at least at first) make life crazier and more complicated.  So, these last few weeks, I'm just trying to live in the moment!

And speaking of how crazy my life will get, I could really use some more guest posts!  That way, you'll still find interesting content here for those first few weeks when I'm having trouble showering, let alone writing!  If you have an idea for a post that you think would be interesting to Frugally Blonde readers, please do send it along.  Thanks so much!

Homemade Hamburger and Hotdog Buns

I've been meaning to share a new DIY food I've tried this summer, but the time has gotten away from me.  However, there still should be plenty of time to barbecue, so why not make some homemade hamburger and hotdog buns?

I'd been wanting to try homemade buns for a while, so when a friend suggested a recipe, I tried it almost immediately.  Verdict: a keeper!  The buns taste like the form that store-bought buns are imitating; a tastier, fresher, better textured version of what you're used to.  It's always good when homemade food tastes like that!

The recipe shared by my friend from a cookbooks of her mom's is pretty similar to this recipe, although mine calls for about 4-1/2 cups of flour and makes up to 16 rolls.  The buns are really simple to make.  I use the dough cycle on the bread machine to mix the dough and for the inital rising.  Then I shape them and let them rise again, then bake them.  It really is hardly more trouble than making my regular sandwich bread.  I also like to substitute a cup of whole wheat flour for one of the cups of bread flour for a little extra nutrition.

I didn't do an exact price comparison, but I'm confident I can make a batch of 16 for less than $1.  Since the cheapest I can find store-bought buns is an 8-pack for $.99, I'm at least cutting costs by 50% in making these.

Plus, you really impress people if you serve them hamburgers and hot dogs on homemade rolls!

Harris Teeter Super Doubles Trip and Other Harris Teeter Love . . .

Yesterday morning made the third morning in a row that I got my girls up and dragged them to Harris Teeter!  They were troopers for the most part, though, although my older daughter did ask, "Why are we going back to Harris Teeter, Mommy?"  Lol.

The deals were really worth it though.  At Super Doubles on Wednesday morning, I got everything pictured above for just $11.13!  My total before sales and coupons was $115.33, making my savings about 90%!

I used the list at Southern Savers to find the deals and coupon matchups; Mrs. Moneysaver also has a list.  Some of my favorites were the free Mission Tortillas, $.29 Danimals and Danonino yogurt, and free Kotex.  I also found cans of Hunts diced tomatoes with balsamic vinegar, garlic, and olive oil marked down to $.64/can.  I used a $1.00/3 blinkie coupon that I had, which doubled, making them free!  That flavor sounds like it will work well in pasta dishes.

And the results of my HT shopping earlier in the week . . . .

What can I say?  They were free after the catalina; they'll last a long time; we're about to have a baby; and I have college-age siblings and a church food collection to donate any extras!

Deal Roundup and Where I've Been Shoppping

Wow - I haven't published a deal roundup in a while, but the deals are smokin' lately, I want to make sure you all hear about them!

This week in groceries I've been busy with:

- The Harris Teeter Kellogg's catalina deal - the catalina deal runs through August 15, but the best deals were to be had last week, when I got tons of Poptarts, NutriGrain bars, and cereal for free after the $10 coupon!

- Harris Teeter Super Doubles started today!  I already went this morning and got some really good deals.  Look for a full post on that later.

School supplies deals are in season now:

- Target has a bunch of cheapies and freebies, like free Post-It notes and Bic pens.  I believe they also still have Crayola 24 packs of crayons for $.25 each.  Last year, I stocked up on a bunch of these for art supply gifts, stocking stuffers, and just to bring out when my girls need fresh crayons.

- If you have a school supply list to fill, check out this price comparison chart to get the best deals.

Amazon has some great deals going now, including:

Melissa and Doug art and craft supplies up to 70% off!  Think ahead to Christmas!  (Thanks, Money Saving Mom)

- 30% off on select diapers and wipes.  Read this post about how to maximize this deal!

Other deals:

Restaurant.com has 80% off again!  This when I stock up on these coupons for date nights.  As always, just read the fine print for each restaurant.

Restaurant.com Weekly Promo Offer 468 x 60

Have you heard of Groupon?  I've been hearing a lot about them lately.  Basically, the idea is that a great restaurant or entertaintment discount is offered in a particular geographica area, and if enough people commit to buy, the deal is confirmed.  Today's deal in the DC area is a $50 gift card to The Peacock Cafe for $50.  Not bad!  Let us know if you've used Groupon or any similar sites.

If you need to order photo prints, York photo has some good deals going on right now.  You can get 100 photos for 4 cents each with code YMW4CP, and you can get free shipping on your $10 print order with code SHPPTS10 through Aug. 24.  Plus, if this is your first time signing up, you can get 40 free prints!

Last but not least, don't forget to scout out summer clearance everywhere!  In my region, clothing stores have definitely clearance their summer clothes, and they might even be getting hard to find.  I expect Target and the drug stores to be discounting their outdoor gear and other summer in the next few weeks.

Where I'm Storing My Freezer Cooking . . .

. . . my new freezer!!!

I've been wanting an extra freezer for a little while, but have been discouraged by the cost (hundreds of dollars) and our lack of a lot of extra space.  Even on Craigslist, I didn't see many freezers for much less than $100, and the ones I did see tended to be old, dirty ones from the garage.

So imagine my excitement at finding this one at a yard sale on Saturday morning, priced at $50.  And the sellers had mentioned that they were open to negotiation, so I offered $40 and was accepted!  This freezer is a Kenmore, is super clean, and is upright rather than a chest, which is convenient.  Plus it is only about 3 feet tall, which is about the smallest I'm going to get.

I'm really excited to see how having the additional freezer space may help me save even more money.  Before if I found marked-down meat, super-cheap produce, or another deal on perishables, I could never buy much more than we would soon eat.  Now I'll have much more ability to stockpile.

Additionally, when I am able to do a freezer cooking day I'll be able to freeze a lot more.  This is very pertinent right now when I'm trying to store up food for us to eat when the baby is born.  I'm hoping I'll get the new freezer pretty full before D-day!

Giveaway Ending Soon!

Don't forget that my giveaway for the Total Pillow versatile pillow ends tomorrow at midnight.  Be sure to enter here!

Menu Plan & Freezer Cooking

This week I'm trying to focus on grocery shopping and cooking.  We've got a baby due in a few weeks here!  At this point, I'm not sure I have the energy for a full intense day of freezer cooking, so I'm trying to just make a few things each week for the next couple of weeks.

Dinners this week involve cooking a big pack of chicken and a roast beef early in the week.  That way we can use the meat all week, and I'll have more time for cooking and baking for the freezer.  I know it will make a big difference to me to have a few dinners and baked goods saved for when the baby comes, and it will save us from spending extra money on groceries or takeout too.

Breakfasts:
cereal, poptarts, yogurt, fruit

Lunches:
cold cut sandwiches, frozen homemade lasanga, tuna, cheese and crackers

Dinners:
Mon - Baked chicken, oven fries, green beans
Tues - Mom's Portable Beef, oven fries, salad
Wed - Pesto chicken sandwiches on homemade rolls, fruit
Thurs - Beef and Chicken fajitas, corn
Fri - Homemade pizza, salad
Sat - Overnight  trip for our anniversary!
Sun - tba

Baking List:
- tortillas
- sandwich rolls

Freezer Cooking:
- 1-2 extra pizzas (make with dinner on Friday)
- peach coffee cake (with $.49/lb. peaches from Harris Teeter)
- extra loaf of sandwich bread

Menu Planning Monday is at Org Junkie.  You can also see other freezer cooking plans over at Money Saving Mom.

Deals this Week: Target Toy Clearance and Harris Teeter Deals!

I was blessed to get some really good deals this week!  On a sort of random "browsing" trip to Target (I was trying to get ideas for my girls' birthdays), I found a couple of aisles of toys market 30-75% off!  I stocked up on several future gifts below:

Hello Kitty playset - $3.08 (was $12.39)
My Little Pony - $2.72 each (were $10.89 each)
Circo Train Repair Shop - $4.98 (was $19.99)

Sometimes clearance toys at Target are mostly junk, like merchandise from movies that are no longer popular, but I was excited to find a really good selection of nice toys this time.  I don't know if this is at other stores, but it's worth a look!

I went to Harris Teeter this morning for the $6.99 E-Vic special on Huggies (and I used a $3.00 printable coupon), but luckily, I checked Mrs. Moneysaver's Harris Teeter deals before I left.  She pointed out the great Kellogg's deal, of which I took full advantage.

Here's what I got:
4 Poptarts - $.99 each
2 Nutri Grain - $1.50 each
2 Special K - $.1.50
1 Froot Loops - $1.69
1 Frosted Mini Wheats - $1.65
Total: $11.32
Coupons used:
(2) $1.00/2 Poptarts
(2) $.75/1 Nutri Grain bars
$1.00/2 Special K
$.70/1 Froot Loops, Corn Pops, or Apple Jacks (from blinkie machine) (did not double)
$1.00/1 Frosted Mini Wheats (from blinkie machine)
Value of coupons: $6.20
Got $10 catalina coupon back

So counting the $10 coupon on my next order, I EARNED $4.88 on this deal!  Sweet!  Wow, now that I realize just how good that deal was, I may try to go back before the sale cycle ends on Tuesday.  (You can check out what coupons are available at Mrs. Moneysaver.)

Definitely a great week for deals!
