Menu Plan This Week: Another Icy Week

Another week of ice and freezing rain is forecast here, so I have a feeling I'll be doing a lot of staying inside.  That's good, because I'd really like to do some real freezer cooking for February the end of this week and stock us up with baked goods and some dinners for a while.

I did stock us up on groceries this weekend, while I could go by myself.  I didn't see myself going out shopping at night when ice is in the forecast!

My menu plan changed somewhat last week, so some of the ideas from last week are on this week's schedule:

Breakfasts:
cereal w. milk
oatmeal
muffins
toast

Lunches:
Leftover lasanga
Tomato soup and salami sandwiches (x2)
Black beans and tortilla chips
Pbj

Dinners:
Mon - Baked chicken fingers w. marinara, carrot sticks, bread
Tues - Leftover pot roast, Barley Bake, green beans
Wed - Chicken tacos w. refried beans, corn, fruit
Thurs - Ham Pasta Primavera, bread
Fri - Black bean quesadillas corn, fruit
Sat - Leftovers
Sun - Frozen ham and bean soup, bread

Selling at Consignment Sales: The Easy Way

Spring will be here before we know it, and at each change of season my thoughts turn to consignment sales! I have written extensively on shopping children's consignment sales (such here, here, and here), so today I thought I'd share my strategy for making a little extra cash by selling at consignment sales.

I meet other moms at these sales who sell all their children's outgrown items and, if the items don't sell at the first sale, they cycle them through other sales. While I'm sure they make a good return on their investment, that can be a lot of work. In contrast, my attitude is much more low-key. First of all, I only sell (and usually only shop) at the one sale where I volunteer. Because I volunteer, I get 70% (instead of 50%) of the profits of what I sell. I use the option to donate any of my items that don't sell, instead of picking them back up. The sale (which supports a charity) will either sell them at their Dollar Dash or donate them to organizations that can use them.

My method of gathering and preparing items to sell is also pretty low-key. First of all, I only sell a relatively small number of items at each sale - maybe $100-$150 worth in consignment prices. This is because my husband and I are open to the possibility of more children in the future, so I save a good number of my children's outgrown items.

However, I do like selling some items twice a year to encourage myself to pare down and clean out my children's wardrobes, equipment, and toys. We don't have the space to store everything, and I know that future children may have different needs and sizes. During the year I keep a box of items to sell, so that when I start thinking about each sale, most of my items are already picked out.

Recently, I have discovered that the perfect place to prepare my items to sell is to hang them on a long dowel suspended from the ceiling of my unfinished basement over the washing machine. As each sale approaches, I bring my box of items to my laundry area and try to hang and tag a few items while I'm doing the laundry. This saves most, if not quite all, of the night before the sale rush. Before I tag my items, I check the sale's website to double-check the tagging guidelines. Every sale has different rules for tagging, and I always make sure that there have been no changes before I prepare everything.

After the items are tagged, I drop them off at the sale the night before, and my job is finished! I would say that I make on average just about $50 per sale. (I make 70% off the prices that the items sell, but some will not sell and some will sell at the half-price sale. Also there is a $5 consignment fee.)

While this may not seem like much, I consider it to be pretty much free money, as the money I paid for the items is water under the bridge. They were budgeted and paid for in the past, so the money I make in selling them is extra income. And since I've refined my system so that it is not burdensome or time-consuming, selling our extras becomes a nice way to earn just a bit of extra money.

Do you sell items at consignment sale or shops? What are your tips and experiences?

Snowy Day Deal Roundup

While I'm sitting around waiting for the big snow predicted this afternoon, I found a few good deals for you:

There's a really good online deal at Eversave today: $15 for $35 of worth of educational toys from Brighter Beginnings Toys - including Melissa and Doug, Klutz, and more.  The save cannot be used for shipping, which is a flat rate of $5.95.  You can buy up to 3 of these saves.  If you sign up for Eversave's email, you can get $2 in credit, making this an even better deal!  This deal is good through tomorrow, but may sell out before then.

Are you thinking about taxes yet?  Right now you can get the online editions of H&R Block at Home or Turbo Tax to prepare, print, and e-file your return for free.

Do you shop LandsEnd Overstocks?  A couple of days ago I ordered bathing suits for my girls for $6.99 each and a skort for $2.08!  You certainly can't beat that price for swimsuits right as we're getting into swim season, when everything's still full price!  If you sign up for LandsEnd's emails, they send you some offer practically every day, and you can almost always get free shipping.

Through 1/28, Fisher Price has free shipping with no minimum.  They always have a pretty decent sale section; this could be a good way to pick up a couple of birthday gifts or even toys for next Christmas.  In the sale section, I saw the Inn at Bethlehem and Three Wise Men sets that go with the Little People Nativity.

Speaking of discount toys, I just found a small section of clearance toys at my local Walmart that were 75% off the clearance prices!  I got two cute playdough sets to keep my girls busy on this snowy day - they were $.87 each!

Continue to keep an eye out for Christmas clearance.  By this time, it may be hidden away in a corner and the pickings will be slim, but anything you do find should be at least 75% off, if not more!

WFMW: Preserving Memories with Photo Books

I have always loved photos for preserving and sharing memories.  When I was a teenager, I organized over ten years of my family's photos, and I was very into scrapbooking as a hobby.  Then I had kids.

When you have three children and your oldest is 4-1/2 and you still haven't finished her first year album, you know that it's time to make a change!  I have come to realize that for me, scrapbooking is no longer a viable hobby.  It can be very expensive and time-consuming, and, although I enjoyed the creativity, I'd rather have current and past photos of my children available to enjoy.

That's why lately I have turned to photos books.  I have now created several digital photo books from a few different sites, and I have been very pleased with the results.  While you probably could spend several hours creating a book, I have spent no more than an hour on each.  I usually use the option where the site fills in the photos for me, and then I can move them and edit if necessary.

The photo books are attractive and sleek, and they can range from pocket sized to large and hardcover.  I can include any number of photos and text I wish.  Best of all, it is easy to find deals on them!

Even if you pick one photo-sharing site to use and one size book to have uniform albums, you can regularly find deals around 30% off.  To save even more, you can do what I do: I'll jump on the best deals, even if all my albums will be different sizes and shapes.  You can find deals for free books (for only the price of shipping) on a semi-regular basis on the money-saving blogs.
Here are some deals that I see today:

Snapfish:
Buy one,Get Two: Buy a 12x12 Photo book receive a free 5x7 & 2x3 Mini Book Code: B1G2PB Exp: 2/01
Free Shipping on Photobooks plus 75 Free Prints Code:FSCPFP 1/1-1/31
Shutterfly:
Save 15-30% on Photobooks
Vistaprint:
50% Off All Photobooks! Hurry, this is a limited time offer! Order today, receive in as few as 3 days.
Clark Color:
After Holiday Clearance! 40% off anything! Includes prints! Enter Code: RINGIN2011 at check out. S&H not included. Exp. 2011-01-31

In this age of digital photos, I like to make sure that I always have at least some physical photos of my family to enjoy together.

How do you handle creating photo albums?  Have you used photo books?

Menu Plan: Last Week of January

Well, so far I've been keeping good track of my receipts this month, and I have $25 left in the grocery budget for January.  We do need a few staples like milk and yogurt, but otherwise I'm trying to use what we have and start fresh next week.

I'm also trying to plan lunches a little better starting this week.  My kids always eat the same things (salami, yogurt, or peanut butter), and I don't mind foraging for whatever.  But my poor husband sometimes suffers if I can't think of much to give him when I pack his lunch in the mornings!  Thus I'm trying to plan better so I have an idea what to give him for all five workdays each week.

Breakfasts
cereal
homemade poptarts
yogurt
chocolate chip muffins
bagels (if I get them baked!)

Lunches
leftover chili with corn chips
salami sandwiches with soup
frozen homemade pizza
hot dogs
pbj

Dinners
Monday - Ham and black-eyed pea soup, bread
Tuesday - Baked chicken fingers, fries, corn
Wednesday - Pot roast, potatoes, carrots
Thursday - Leftover pot roast
Friday - Lasagna roll-ups, salad, bread
Saturday - Chicken finger tacos, corn, fruit
Sunday - Leftovers or tbd!

2011 Financial Goals

A couple of weeks ago, I shared how my family did on accomplishing our 2010 financial goals.  Now it's time to get into the swing of things with our goals for the new year.

My husband and I have designated this year as "recovery year" financially, so our goals are not too exciting.  After a year in which we had a baby, dealt with an unexpected hospital stay and medical bills, and purchased new computers (more on that later), we have some catching up to do.  Therefore, our main and really only big goal is:

Fully Fund Our 3-Month Emergency Fund - We've planned out our budget for the year, and if we are careful, we should be able to hit this number by the end of the year.  We've come close for several years, but we've always ended up using some of the money.  We'd really like to get this money socked away so that we don't have to touch it except for a true emergency.

Also, once again I've designated some "frugal goals," ways I plan to save money in the new year to help accomplish our main goal:

Stick closely to our budget and cover incidental expenses - My husband and I are pretty good at sticking to a budget - I mean, I do write a frugal blog!  But like everyone else, we have our weaknesses, and of course unexpected expenses always come up.  In the past, we have sometimes gone over our budget in certain categories, which in turn eats up money saved for other things.  This year, I think I have set a realistic and workable budget, and I am determined for us to adhere to it.  That way, the money set aside for things such as car repairs is there when we need it, and we don't have to touch our savings.

Stick to a $300 grocery budget - I worked on this last year and came pretty close.  According to my Pear Budget year in review, I averaged $303/month.  However, it varied somewhat, as high as $331 and as low as $250.  This partially had to do with my pregnancy and having a new baby; I wasn't as strict with myself as I had planned.  This year, however, I'd like to stay within $300 every month, including months with holidays and events.

Keep excellent track of our spending - Sometimes the only reason I'd go a little over budget in a spending category is that I hadn't kept up with all my receipts and thought there was more left in the budget than there was.  Now that I have a portable computer of my own, I have no excuse for not keeping exactly up to date with entering my receipts in Pear Budget.

Like I said, our goals this year are pretty back-to-the-basics.  I dream of some day being able to save for a more "fun" and interesting goal, but for now I am just grateful that we are able to live under our income and that we have what we need.

Do have any financial or "frugal" goals you'd like to share?

Check out more frugal tips at Frugal Fridays.

WFMW: Shopping at Night

When do you grocery shop?

At this season of my life, with a 4 year old, 2 year old, and 4 month old, I have switched do doing the majority of my grocery shopping at night.  Maybe I'm a wimp, but I just find it too difficult to take all three children and concentrate on shopping at the same time.  If my 4 year old is not asking for things, my 2 year old is running down the aisle or the baby is crying!

I think the only other option right now would be to drastically reduce my bargain shopping and hit only one store a week; I could probably manage that with the kids.  However, I could not in any way keep up our approximately $300/month grocery/household budget if I stopped hitting different stores for deals.

The solution right now has been that one night a week, usually on Monday nights, I head out around 8:00PM, after we've finished dinner.  I can hit three stores in two hours by myself.  I had been taking the baby, but since he's gotten a little older and it's been so cold, I've left by poor husband with him as well!  (Hubby does a great job, even if they all get in bed a little late. ;-)

As a confirmed "morning person," I actually hate going out at that hour, although it is peaceful once I'm shopping alone.  However, for now I'm willing to make the sacrifice to keep both our budget and my sanity intact!

A Few Amazon Purchases

I just loved Amazon while I was doing my Christmas shopping.  Their prices are almost always very competitive, if not the cheapest, and the ease of ordering everything online is just what I need right now.  Plus, it was so convenient to get free two-shipping with no minimum through Amazon Mom.

So even though I don't typically order too much online the rest of the year, I found myself making a couple of Amazon purchases today.

First of all, I ordered this Melissa and Doug Responsibility Chart.
It was only $13 - I know I've seen it in Target for $20.  I've really been wanting to work on some habits with my 4-year old, and I thought this would be much more motivating for her than just a printable online chart, especially as she can't read yet.

Then I ordered this hopping ball as her first reward for completing the chart.  I ordered a similar one for LuLu for Christmas, and they both absolutely love it.  It will be worth it to me for them both to have one, as it is the perfect way for them to work off some energy indoors!

I also just ordered a new package of Luvs diapers for Gem.  With the Amazon Mom discount, Subscribe and Save discount, and my 20% off code from the January American Baby, the diapers were cheaper than generics!

Did I mention that I love Amazon?

Menu Plan

Can you tell I'm finishing up a big ham this week?  I got a ham for $1.99/lb. at Wegmans last week and cooked it for my husband's birthday.  I think the hams were discounted as Christmas clearance, but they were good until March!

Here's what we're eating this week.  I'm noticing that my freezer's pretty bare.  In a couple of weeks I'm hoping to do a big freezer cooking day, which I have not been able to do it quite a while.  But for now, I'm making do and living from week to week.

Breakfasts:
yogurt
oatmeal
English muffins
banana bread
Lunches:
salami sandwiches and tomato soup
peanut butter
leftovers

Snacks:
apples and oranges
Teddy Grahams
popcorn
bread w. olives spreads (leftover from party)

Dinners:
Mon - Ham, mashed potatoes, applesauce, corn
Tues - Slow cooker beef with red sauce, salad
Wed - Ham and bean soup, homemade bread
Thurs - Breakfast for dinner: Ham and cheese fritatta, Pumpkin-pecan pancakes (from WS mix)
Fri - Pasta with green beans and ricotta (based on this recipe), salad, bread
Sat - Leftovers
Sun - Baked chicken fingers, fries, fruit salad

Calling Other Grocery Deal Bloggers!

I am looking to offer some additional grocery store deals here on Frugally Blonde, so that my readers can find some of the deals and coupon matchups that I use right here on this blog.  Since I obviously can't offer deals for every store, I'd like to focus on the stores that are in my area, especially the ones where I usually shop.

If you are a blogger who publishes grocery stores deals for one of the following stores, or if you'd like to try your hand at it, please email me.  I would be interested in publishing the highlights of your store deals each week, with a link to your blog and your complete deal list in my post.

The stores that I'm most interested in publishing are the following (although I might be open to other stores):
Target
Giant
Safeway
Harris Teeter

And don't forget that you already can find deals here for Bloom, CVS, and, of course, Wegmans.

Losing Weight on a Budget

Like many other people, I'm starting the new year with a new resolve to eat healthy and lose a little weight.  I guess I'm a little satiated with all the holiday sweets, and I also still have about 15 pounds of baby weight that I'd like to see go. ;-)

I'm not planning any kind of intense diet (I'm still breastfeeding full time!).  Instead, I'm trying to make a few small changes that I hope will have a big impact.  Here are the things I'm focusing on:

- Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables - My kids always eat fruit like it's going out of style, but I find that I sometimes forget to eat it myself!  Either I don't take the time to prep it, or I subconsciously leave it for the kids.  That's no good; my kids need a healthy mommmy!  This week I even broke down and bought some prewashed spinach at Wegmans.  It was a little more expensive than a head of lettuce, but not having to wash it will encourage me to eat it!  The cost of fresh fruits and vegetables can add up, but I know they don't have to break my budget.

- Not buying unhealthy items - This is a simple way to both be healthier and save money - not buying things!  With the holidays over, I'm trying not to spend money on many desserts.  I'm also planning to make some new healthy homemade snacks as opposed to more expensive and less healthy store bought cracker and chip-type items.

- Avoiding eating after dinner - I admit it, I fall into this common trap.  My husband and I often watch a little TV in the evenings after the kids are in bad, and we usually have tea and dessert or even sometimes - gasp - chips and salsa!  I really enjoy relaxing with my husband, but my new resolve is to serve a small dessert right after dinner and to stick with a cup of tea later in the evening.

Well, these are my plans, anyway!  I'll let you know how I'm doing!  I definitely am not perfect when it comes to the healthy eating department, but I do always maintain that eating a very healthy diet on a budget is an attainable and realistic goal!

Check out the tips at Works for Me Wednesday.

Wegmans Deals: 1/9-1/15

Wegmans has recently moved from weekly sales flyers to Monthly Sales Guides, which are available in stores and online.  As you know, most of their sales already last much longer than a week, so this is not really much of a change.

I will continue to publish my Wegmans deals every week; however keep in mind that the most new sales will appear on the first week of the month, when the new flier is published.  On the other weeks, anything new will be unadvertised deals that I've found or commenters have shared.

Also, remember that you can sign up for Fresh News Emails from Wegmans, which include a printable coupon each week.  Some coupons are for very specific items, like Wegmans meatballs; others have been very useful general coupons, like $1 off $5 worth of produce.

Finally, check your store this week for toy clearance!

Wegmans Toy Clearance and More

This morning I ventured out to Wegmans with all three kids.  It actually went pretty well!  Anyway, I saw found some great clearance deals that I had to share with you all.

Wegmans' Christmas decor was mostly cleaned out at my store, but they had a number of discount toys.  I found several shelves of toys discounted 40-75% off, including Alex Toys, Playmobil, Lego, and Thomas Trackmaster.  One of the best deals was this Alex Toys kitchen, which is $59.99 on Amazon right now, for $19.99!

Think about upcoming birthdays or even saving for next Christmas!

I also found some good markdowns in the dairy section.  Nestle Holiday Swirl cookie dough was marked down to $.99, and tubs of gingerbread dough were marked down to $1.99.  With this $.75/1 or  this $1.00/1 Nestle cookie dough coupon, you could even get some free!

Of course, clearance items will vary by store, but it might be worth making a trip to your Wegmans to look for these deals!

Christmas and Winter Clearance Tips

I love this clearanc-y time of year!

Of course, you can find clearance deals year-round, especially after holidays, but there seems to be the most this time of year.  Maybe it's because stores are shedding all the bulky winter merchandise for the light spring items, or maybe it's that they stock so much Christmas merchandise that there is still much to unload after the holidays.

Today I wanted to share a few tips for winter clearance shopping, both for finding deals and for maximizing the deals you find.

- Wait - Some people run out the day after Christmas to start their shopping, but that has pretty much zero appeal for me.  Not only do I like to spend the day after Christmas relaxing, playing, and eating, but really, the deals the day after are usually not so great.  Often many Christmas items are discounted somewhat the week before Christmas, and the day after the holiday they will not yet be marked down further.  Instead, I start my clearance shopping now, about two weeks after Christmas, when most items have moved to around 75% off.  (The only time I would shop right after Christmas is to look for very specific items.)

- Think beyond next Christmas - Yes, now is a great time to stock up on wrapping supplies, decorations, holiday clothing, and stocking stuffers for next holiday season, but there are also clearance items that can be used all year.  Think wrapping for birthday presents, toys for year-round gifts, stocking stuffers as Easter basket stuffers - the list goes on.  This is also the cheapest time to buy winter clothing, even with at least three months of cold weather left.  If your child has grown lately and needs clothes, you're in luck!  Since my kids have the clothes they need right now, I am buying one size up for next year.

- Look everywhere for sales - Even stores that don't seem to carry many seasonal items offer sales this time of year to make room for new merchandise.  So if you're planning a purchase from a certain store, check now for clearance sales.  Also look for markdowns on unexpected items - wintery foods, holiday scents of toiletries, etc.  Check back corners and aisles of stores to find racks of the last remaining Christmas items once the Valentine's displays are up.

- Don't get carried away - Yes, I probably bought a number of items we didn't need at 90% off.  Paper decorations at $.29 each?  Sure!  But in general, I do try to make sure I have a legitimate use for the clearance items.  Even if the adorable porcelain Santa was $29.99 and is now $4.99, if it's just another Christmas knick-knack that the kids might break, maybe I should save the $4.99 for something else!

Target Christmas Clearance

Get thee to a Target!

Last night I was finally feeling well enough get out to try to score a few deals on the after Christmas sales, and boy did I go at the right time!  Tuesday, when my husband picked up my prescription, he said that the Christmas section at our Target was at 75% off.  However, when I went last night, it had gone to 90% off!!!

It's always a surprise what you find at 90% off - some stuff they can hardly give away and some stuff that you're surprised didn't sell earlier.  This year I found a lot of decor items.  I got fun hanging paper decorations for next year, a tree topper for our tree (which we've never had), tinsel, and ornament hooks.  I also found several little Christmas cookie and candy kits which will be fun to whip up with the kids in the next few days, since we still have a couple of holiday parties to attend.

I was a little disappointed not to find more stocking stuffers and wrapping items, as I have in past years, but that's how it goes!  I still will be combing other stores in the next few weeks for Christmas items at rock-bottom prices.

But Christmas decor is not your only reason to get to Target.  I seriously saw clearance tags all over the store!  Glade candles in holiday scents were 50% off; baby holiday wear was 75% off.  I got a box of Christmas Captain Crunch for a fun breakfast for $1.25 (would be even better with a coupon).  One big clearance section I am watching is toys.  My store had multiple aisles of toys for 30% off, which is a great deal if you have upcoming birthdays.  However, I am watching for 70% off, which should happen in the next couple of weeks.  I have scored some terrific toy deals at 70% off, but you have to come at the right time.

Have you been to Target lately?  Have you scored any other great Christmas clearance deals?
